Katy Perry to host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards

Johannesburg, 28 July 2017: MTV today announced global pop superstar Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards that will broadcast live in partnership with Smirnoff from the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California on MTV (DStv channel 130) on Monday28 August at 02:00 CAT with a repeat on 28 August at 21:30 CAT.

This comes in advance of the world tour for her most recent, chart-topping album, Witness, Perry will light up the stage as the first performer announced for this year’s show.  Earlier this week, she secured a spot as one of the top nominees for the 2017 VMAs with nods in five categories, including: Best Pop, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects for “Chained to the Rhythm,” Best Art Direction for “Bon Appetit,” and Best Collaboration for Calvin Harris’ “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Perry and Big Sean.

“I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson,” said Katy Perry.  “Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids.”

Leading the pack of the nominations for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards is rapper Kendrick Lamar with eight nominations for his video “HUMBLE” while Katy Perry and The Weeknd who are tied for five nominations each.

Building on the critical acclaim of the non-gendered categories at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the network also announced the former “Best Female Video” and “Best Male Video” categories have been combined for “Artist of the Year.” Additionally, “Best Fight Against the System” has been added to celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice.

To add African flair to the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Africa and Smirnoff will be travelling to the ceremony with choreographer and television personality Somizi Mhlongo who will cover the red carpet. His coverage will be showcased in a show dubbed United States of Somizi which will air at a later date on the channel.

MTV’s move to non-gendered categories aligns perfectly with Smirnoff’s Equalizing Music initiative, which strives to drive gender parity and diversity in the music industry. What’s more, the addition of the new category compliments Smirnoff’s efforts in shining a light on creatives who use their platforms to address social issues through their newly launched Change Makers campaign, which aims to encourage everyone to make a positive change.”

Beginning today, fans can vote for their favorites across eight VMA categories, including “Video of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” “Best Collaboration” and more by visiting www.vma.mtv.com.  Additionally, voting for the “Best New Artist” award, presented by Taco Bell®, will remain live through the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show airing on MTV (DStv channel 130) on Monday 28 August at 01:00 CAT and repeat 28 August at 20:30 CAT.  The top two artists will be revealed during the pre-show, kicking off a live Twitter hashtag vote with the winner being announced during the live main telecast.  Nominees for the socially voted category, “Best Song of Summer,” will be announced at a later date.
