Apple Music New Artist Spotlight shines on Alternative-Pop Collective Dutchkid
The first thing these guys would tell you is…they are not a band… but instead call themselves a collective – meaning everybody contributes to the project with their own specific skill sets, over and above whichever instrument or part they perform on their tracks.
Apple Music is proud to feature Dutchkid as the Apple Music New Artist Spotlight for September, with several of the bands’ singles and their brand-new EP titled Empires available now.
Dutchkid is an independent alternative-pop collective that formed in March 2017. The South London based group consists of an inter-continental collection of musicians, made up of South African born Jordi van Dyk, and Englishmen Pete Coggan, Chris Smyth and Jack Kircher.
With a sound that has been described as a refreshing electropop soundscape with layered harmonies and deep, growling, bass heavy synths, Dutchkid have definitely started making an impression with their unique style and songwriting that takes you on a beautifully journey of emotion.
Their dynamic is simple – no member is above the other in terms of decisions. It is a collaborative process that utilizes each of their skills, making Dutchkid a self-producing, self-promoting and even self-filming group of musicians who work together to get their music out to the world. Three of the guys are filmmakers as well and take turns to conceptualize and film the different music videos the group have released online.
The Apple Music New Artist Spotlight is an artist development feature where a light is shone on a new South African artist each month, giving them four weeks of editorial support in Apple Music as artist, in the Mzansi section and in key Apple Music playlists such as The A-List: South Africa, Best of the Week and more.
Previous South African artists that have benefited from the Apple Music New Artist Spotlight include Thandi Ntuli, The Big Hash, Diamond Thug, Sun-El Musician, Shekhinah, Shane Eagle, Elandre, Sketchy Bongo, Amanda Black, Emerger, Babes Wodumo, Sipho The Gift, Johnny Cradle, Tholwana, Lucy Kruger, Moonga K, Josh Kempen and Alice Phoebe Lou.
